RWS vs Akella
« on: May 07, 2012, 06:29:04 AM »
I'm reading "the russian postal" everytime etc,
I just wanted to know what was RWS' part in developing the game and what did Akella do? What did TM do?
Or did Akella just buy the rights and fuck up badly?
How far did this concern RWS? It would be sad if RWS won't last another 100 years.

I bet GTA doesn't have one of these...

Akella financed the project, TM developed it (Akellas in house dev team) and RWS designed it, although RWS's design was probably only 20% followed, if that.  RWS also did some in house work such as much of the art in the game, and the original Postal dude model that got replaced by Akella by a technically better (higher polly and detail) but worse looking dude (imo).

RWS still own the IP rights for Postal.

Why didn't they follow your design?
Maybe if Vince would be capable of drinking more vodka they would have...
Will we see another "big" RWS project? Just thinking a P1 remake isnt that big

A re-release of PIII, and call it "The Designer's Cut" or something. Have the box art featuring one of the major characters holding the official RWS 'Scissors' in a salon setting. Or make Vince dress up like that for said photo.

Why did TM develop it instead of RWS?  This is the only game franchise RWS has!  To hand the reigns over to someone else is ludicrous and not checking for adherence to their original design is even more so.  Unfortunately, it shows in the final product.  No open world, 3rd person instead of 1st (hit detection does not feel solid and horrible camera sway), missions are not enjoyable, Postal Dude's model and voice and are inferior to Postal 2 version, numerous bugs / glitches, and the list goes on...  I feel bad because my bro spent 40 bucks on this game for me and it turned out to be such a disappointment.  I will never purchase or let anyone purchase any product from RWS again.

Postal 2 didn't really make any money due to not many stores stocking it, so funding Postal 3 was not really an option.  Akellas offer seemed responsible at the time, and considering they had a much bigger budget and team than Postal 2, it seemed unthinkable they would make a game that was vastly worse than Postal 2 was.  Things started off pretty well in fairness, but when the crash of '07 happened it all started to unravel.

The game was supposed to be open world, TM seemingly could not handle it... the third person view point was actually an RWS decision, albeit one I disagreed with. 6 of us voted on it, 4 supported the third person and 2 supported first.  Although really its' a mute point, the viewpoint was the least of the games problems.

It was a mistake, RWS accept this.  It really shows what an achievement Postal 2 was really, made my only 6 people in 18 months.

Wow, that history of the development of Postal II and III is interesting and really depressing. I can't believe Postal II didn't make money given all the free PR it got from asshole politicians.

Maybe things would be different now with more people buying downloads on services like Steam and having fast broadband. Even though you guys sold Postal 2 CDs online maybe a lot of people don't like to wait a week for a CD to arrive in the post or 5 years ago still wanted to handle the box in the store and just weren't ready for buying downloads. A lot's changed since then with people having accepted steam and itunes.

I really hope we see a Postal IV.

A 4th Postal game would be great (if it was RWS made),but we'll probably see a postal remake/reboot in hd and/or running on the unreal engine.
Silly Billy.

Hm well, if the unreal engine was too expensive to license for P3 I doubt RWS will use it
for a remake of Postal. Especially after the events of the P3 development.

I prefered the Unreal. Well, the russian Postal also had it's moments... tho Akella's stupidity.
A Postal 2 remake with better graphics and an enhanced story plus additional weapons would be awesome.

I second that, but no Steam, and with some bug fixes & the russian freeroam patch.  That's what I wanted P3 to be in the first place.  A finished game.

For the record, RWS made the big stupid fuckin mistake of thinking that we could work together with a dev team half way around the world. Bottom line is I remain hopeful that in the future we will get the assets we deserve and then we will do our best to fix and improve so we will have a real POSTAL III

I've been following these events for a little while now on these forums from what the Admins have been saying and signed up simply to post this pretty much: What good reason are Akella giving for not releasing the development tools?  Surely as they have now seemingly abandoned the game, having fans produce more content will help to keep the game selling?  I'd understand if they had DLC planned or some bullshit like that, or maybe were scared about having assets ripped and used elsewhere, but all that's a non issue now surely?

Ever since the announcement that Postal 3 being on the source engine back in 07 I was really excited as I knew some fantastic mods would come of it.... then this. The game is lame and broken, but it would at least be a great base for expansion... so tragic.  Can Vince, or anyone from RWS explain why they didn't write into a contract that the SDK would be released with the game?  Or did you just trust 'a dev team half way around the world' that much that you didn't even consider it?  It is what kept P2 alive and a fan base around for all these years and now nothing.  /rant.
