How To Deal With Non-Gamers
« on: April 16, 2012, 09:47:34 AM »

I have ran into way to many of these people. "I totally despise video games. They are the downfall of our civilization." Alright, that's nice but why? "Because they are a waste of time money and people." Now, before I get a hundred complaints on how that last sentance was written, I believe in qouting people exactly. I will refer to this later.

I talk to alot of people. I am always trying to meet a new friend or an intelligent person that can turn me on to something new. I meet them on X-Box Live, PSN, chat rooms, forums, and generally everywhere. So when I explained to this person that video games were a large part of the economy this was there response. It has been kept in exact structure.

"too many children are stuck with overgrown 15 year olds playing the xbox, and too many parents are stuck with socially akward teenagers who have the vocabulary of an 8 year old"

I have two options here. First option is to say," Fuck you, really? From someone who doesn't partake you hav one hell of an opinion." My second option was to say this, "There are way to many things wrong with that statement. First, most children are stuck inside solely because of how society perceives safety. Second, the have been hundreds of scientific studies on gamers and socialization, they have found that most video game players have better socialization skills than those who dont. Third, most     gamer's have a high vocabulary level. Actually, most games now and most made during the ninities, used more multisylabic words than most trade paperbacks."

I chose the second option. There is a reason why all of should try to take the higher road with people like this. If all we say is,"Fuck you, you is stupid." All we do is prove that person right. We don't need more of these people running around or to add fuel to their fire.

"Well, video games give children autism."

No shit, exact qoute. There is absolutely no scientific proof to back up that statement. Actually, more studies have shown that video games can improve socialization skills in autisic children. I talk abou that more in a Gaming and Religion article.

"Because they are a waste of time money and people."

I am a writer, so I find this statement appaulling. Actually, it makes me sick when anyone without a basic education has the nerve to say this. That's right, this person was 33 and didn't have a high school education.

Now, I am not trying to be a dick and crush this person with intellect. I am no where close to being wise. I do know, that without growth in the arts that they will die. I am not trying to tell you what to do but this is my approach.

1. Explain the facts: More and more studies are showing that video games can be beneficial. Point this out but try your best to be informative without being stuck up. I know that's hard because I often come off that way. Really, just take your time.

2. Don't use four letter words: Those are my favorites but it doesn't help their image of what a gamer is. Really, it's hard not to get mad and let loose but keep your temper.

3. Know when to walk away: It doesn't help if you blow your gasket. Just walk away and shake your head. Self controll can be hard sometimes but if you love gaming, you also know that losing sometimes is winning. Especially, if you have played through Final Fantasy IV.

We can't change the image of gamers over night. It takes time. It means that we can't let our emotions get the best of us and knowing that somethings can be let go. Hopefully, you don't have to go through to many of these conversations.

Stephen: This problem is not just localized in the America. On the other parts of the world, especially third world, they are more susceptible to the ignorance of video games. Video games are very easy targets if shit happened to a person or anything.

I had magazines in local, native language which sometimes talked about "Western Media is Bad and Terrible". Inside there, reeked of ignorance, to them, anything to do with violence and guns will be somewhat connected to video games.

And there they went, taking examples of Doom and the Columbine Incident, and some other video game (that perpetrator did not play any games, I supposed) with the VT Institute Incident.

In modern Singapore, many of those people stopped blaming video games (I presume). They had banned Mortal Kombat and that (m)ass Effect because of a midget alien lesbian sex before but that's about it. Plus, EA and Lucasfilm made a branch in the island too, so they are much more open about games nowadays.

It's really about changing the idea of how we deal with anti-gamers. I kind of phoned this one in honestly. I have had kind of a rough day dealing with personal shit so no excuses but still, yelling screaming and being a dick won't solve the perception issue.

I would have just ignored those "anti-gamers". Most of the times they do not know what are they talking about. :)

Yeah, but I think all things can be solved through discourse, and sex.

Yeah, but I think all things can be solved through discourse, and sex.

There are some anti-gamers which actually very Bible-thumpers (no offence).

I spoke to one of them. He seemed to take the blame on the video games for the violence in society, without thinking. I'd safely say, impulsive thinking.

I'm not Christian, but I had studied in a Christian school before.

I don't know what Stephen would tell you but maybe if you explained how some games high light basic Christian values the maybe you could reach him not everyone is going to get everything but I see where he is coming from all the jack Thompson mods for games just made us seem like dicks and people sending him death threats was worse I don't like Thompson but when we do that doesn't it just prove their point I took offense personally to the undereducated statement my mom had cancer when I was 16 so I had to drop out of high school to help raise my siblings I don't want anyone calling me an attention whore but that's the way it is I have gotten my GED since but level of education and ignorance have nothing in common but I respect what he is staying

I'm sorry if I offended you in my posts - and I'm sorry to hear about your family's condition as well.  My parents weren't much educated during the younger days as they have the same conditions - low wages and such.

Maybe Stephen reffered to irrational people who made snide remarks about games.
