Languages Spoken?
« on: April 12, 2012, 06:17:32 AM »
Languages? Speak?

My main language isn't English. I can only speak English, Malay and Cantonese.

I used to learn a semester equivalent of Japanese but then didn't use it much. My neighbour used to teach me how to write Russian alphabets when he was studying in Moscow.  :)

I learned and got exposed to Mandarin before. Even being in a full Mandarin speaking environment for a few years, it was very hard to learn them. Some words are very hard to pronounce and some words can be a real killer. Despite being close to Cantonese, it isn't assumed that it is 100% connected.

I have also known a bit of Hokkien (another Chinese dialect) and I had never spoke much in it.

German? I had two learn Deustche language books, all collecting dust under my bed. All I ended up knowing is "Ich bin ein Mann".

And no, despite the similarities in Malay and Indonesian (I've got a few foreigners who asked me that), it isn't all similar. I can read a whole Indonesian article and guessed the meanings, but I couldn't speak or write it. The gap is much huge than the Brit English and the American English.

Yeah I've always wanted to learn German too.  Sadly I think they stopped offering it a few years before I was able to take language courses at school.  There's always Rosetta Stone though.  Wonder how well that program works.

Rosetta Stone, doesn't work well. Really, the best way to learn a language is through emersion. I learned Russian in a county jail in Georgia. The reason why I say Rosetta Stone is bad is because of lack of reagional dialects.

Czech, English with this oh so sexy Czech accent and so-so German - I used to love it and know more of it but when I finished school I was too lazy to practice since everybody speaks English anyway. Yeah, and a little bit of Norwegian, gotta love these Nordic languages. I'm planning to start learning Danish when my level of laziness drops a few meters down to a more acceptable point. In 10 years maybe. Fuck I wish I wasn't that lazy.

Are Polish and Czech dialects of each other? From what I heard, it sounded almost the same. My neighbour taught me a bit of Russian, and then taught myself a few words, and found some words sound very close to Polish and Czech, according to a dictionary I referred.

Is a "Vtornik" reminds you of "Tuesday"? I only know this word.

Polish and Czech are two different languages, but they are very similiar. Slovak language and Russian are quite similiar too.
Even though I've never learned Czech or Russian, I can understand some words or even sentences, because some of them sound almost the same as in my native language.
