Ralph H. Baer - March 8, 1922 – December 6, 2014




Video Gamers everywhere were saddened to hear of the loss of one of the most important people ever involved in the history of video gaming. On December 6, 2014, Ralph H. Baer age 92, passed away at his home in Manchester, New Hampshire.

A pioneer in the video game field, Mr. Baer was considered to be the inventor of video games and was noted for his many contributions to the video game industry. An inventor and engineer working in electronics, he came up with the idea of playing games on television screens. Working with two others, he developed and patented several hardware prototypes one of which “the Brown Box”, became the first home video game console. Later known as the Magnavox Odyssey, the console was first presented to the public in 1972. He received many awards for his work including the National Medal of Technology from Former President George W. Bush in 2006, the Game Developers Choice Pioneer Award 2008 and was entered in the National Invento...
